Microsoft says Crowd Strike update impacts 8.5M devices

(MENAFN) On Saturday, Microsoft estimated that the CrowdStrike update impacted 8.5 million Windows devices, which is less than 1 percent of all Windows devices.

The software update from the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused system issues that disrupted flights, forced media outlets to suspend broadcasts, and blocked access to essential services such as healthcare and banking.

This outage brought attention to CrowdStrike, a company valued at USD83 billion with over 20,000 subscribers worldwide, including major clients like Amazonand Microsoft, despite its low public profile.

CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz stated on the X platform that a bug was found "in a single content update for Windows hosting servers," affecting Microsoft customers.

Out of over 110,000 scheduled commercial flights on Friday, 5,000 were canceled globally, with more cancellations expected, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Banks and financial services have alerted customers to potential disruptions, market traders reported issues with executing transactions, and insurance companies might face a surge in claims due to the disruptions.

The outage also highlighted concerns that many organizations are ill-prepared to implement contingency plans when IT system or software failures can cripple entire systems.

Experts warn that such outages are likely to recur until more robust contingency plans are integrated into networks and organizations adopt better backup solutions.
