Iran’s fuel consumption to drop by 10 percent by March 2025
(MENAFN) Jalil Salari, the head of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC), announced that the implementation of recent fuel consumption management programs by the Oil Ministry is expected to lead to a 10 percent reduction in fuel usage in Iran by the end of the current Iranian year, which concludes in late March 2025. Salari noted that this reduction is projected to equate to a decrease of approximately 10 million liters of fuel consumption.
He highlighted that Iran's fuel consumption had increased significantly, rising from 32 billion liters in the Iranian calendar year 1400 (March 2021-March 2022) to an estimated 46 billion liters in the current year. This upward trend has raised urgent concerns about the need for effective measures to curtail consumption.
In his remarks, Salari emphasized that the Oil Ministry is committed to supporting knowledge-based companies and has developed a mapping system aimed at optimizing urban and suburban transportation. The implementation of this system is anticipated to reduce daily fuel consumption by an estimated five to seven million liters.
Despite achieving self-sufficiency in gasoline production and becoming a net exporter of this crucial fuel, Iran's soaring domestic gasoline consumption has rekindled concerns over the necessity of imports. The country became a net gasoline exporter in February 2019, following the completion of the third phase of the Persian Gulf Star Refinery project, which significantly boosted its daily production capacity.
Salari also pointed out that average daily gasoline consumption in Iran increased by 11 percent over the past Iranian calendar year 1402 (ending March 19), with current daily production reaching 115 million liters. He expressed concern over the exponential rise in gasoline consumption, noting a 20 percent increase in 1401 and the continued upward trajectory observed in the following year. He reiterated the critical need for focused fuel consumption management strategies to address these challenges effectively.
