Biden: NATO allies work to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities against Russian aerial attacks

(MENAFN) During NATO's 75th anniversary summit in Washington, D.C., US President Joe Biden announced a significant collective effort among NATO allies to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities against continued Russian aerial attacks. Biden characterized the initiative as a "historic donation of air defense equipment," involving contributions from Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, and the United States.

Key components of this support include additional Patriot batteries jointly provided by Germany, Romania, and the US, along with additional Patriot components from the Netherlands and other partners. Italy will contribute an additional SAMP-T system, totaling five systems under the collaborative effort. Additionally, in the coming months, NATO allies will deliver dozens of tactical air defense systems to Ukraine, including NASAMS, HAWKs, IRIS T-SLM, IRIS T-SLS, and Gepard systems.

Biden underscored NATO's unwavering support for Ukraine, emphasizing that while Russia's aggression persists, Ukraine has the collective support of NATO to defend itself. He highlighted the redirection of US air defense interceptor munitions to Ukraine, pausing exports to other allies and partners in response to ongoing Russian drone and ballistic missile attacks.

The President asserted that Russia's prolonged conflict in Ukraine has resulted in significant losses, with over 350,000 casualties among its troops and nearly 1 million Russians fleeing the country due to bleak prospects at home. Biden portrayed Russia's actions as a "war of choice" that has failed, maintaining that NATO stands firm against any potential Russian victory in Ukraine, which could embolden Russia's allies and pose grave risks to global security.

Preceding Biden, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg echoed concerns over the implications of a Russian triumph in Ukraine, warning of heightened threats to international stability and security posed by Russia and its allies.
