Fire contains Al-Zour refinery in Kuwait without impact on production
(MENAFN) Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC) reported on Saturday a minor fire incident in a storage area at the Al-Zour refinery, affirming that production remains unaffected. According to Ali Al-Ajmi, the company's spokesperson, firefighting teams are actively engaged in managing the situation, with no reported casualties or injuries.
Last December, KIPIC, a state-owned entity, announced the successful and safe completion of operations for its third and final units at the Al-Zour refinery. This milestone marked the fulfillment of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation's strategic objective to achieve maximum refining capacity at the facility, set at 615 thousand barrels per day.
The Al-Zour Refinery stands as Kuwait's most advanced facility in the sector, boasting a construction cost exceeding USD16 billion. It specializes in producing a range of products, including low-sulfur fuel oil with a sulfur content of 0.5 percent. A significant portion of these outputs is supplied domestically to the Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity and Water, while the remainder is exported globally.
Following the expansion facilitated by the new units, Kuwait's overall refining capacity now totals 1.415 million barrels per day. This capacity includes operations from the country's other refineries, Mina Abdullah and Al-Ahmadi, which together contribute 800 thousand barrels per day under the auspices of Kuwait National Petroleum Company.
The incident underscores Kuwait's continued commitment to maintaining operational safety and efficiency within its critical oil infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted production and supply capabilities amidst occasional challenges.
