Turkey’s Istanbul airport clinches title of busiest air hub in Europe

(MENAFN) Türkiye's Istanbul Airport was the busiest air hub in Europe last week, according to the nation's transportation and infrastructure minister, Abdulkadir Uraloglu. From June 17-23, Istanbul Airport recorded 1,520 daily flights, a 21 percent increase compared to the pre-pandemic period in 2019. This data was provided by the European Organization for Air Navigation Safety (Eurocontrol).

Istanbul Airport, which is the largest airport in Türkiye's most populous city and a major tourist destination, also ranked seventh among the top 25 airports worldwide during the same week, with 768 daily departures. Additionally, Türkiye ranked sixth among European countries in terms of air traffic, averaging 3,894 flights per day.

Uraloglu highlighted that Turkish airspace is among the most efficient in Europe, boasting an average delay time of less than half a minute per flight. This efficiency contributes to the robust performance of the country's air traffic system.

Other notable Turkish airports also showed strong performance. Antalya Airport, located on the Turkish Riviera, ranked eighth in Europe last week with an average of 992 daily flights. This marks a 12 percent increase from the same period in 2019, reflecting the growth in air travel in the region.

These figures underscore the significant role of Turkish airports in global and European air traffic, showcasing their capacity to handle increasing flight volumes and maintain high operational efficiency.
