Statistics Canada projects significant population growth 2073

(MENAFN) According to Statistics Canada's projections released on Monday, Canada's population, estimated at 40.1 million in 2023, is anticipated to experience substantial growth in the coming decades. By 2073, the population is expected to range between 47.1 million and 87.2 million, depending on different growth scenarios outlined by the national statistical agency.

Under the medium-growth scenario, Canada's population is projected to reach approximately 62.8 million by 2073. This scenario assumes a gradual decline in the annual population growth rate, decreasing from an average of 1.12 percent over the past 30 years to 0.79 percent by 2072/2073.

In contrast, the high-growth scenario suggests a higher annual growth rate of 1.59 percent, whereas the low-growth scenario anticipates a minimal increase of 0.07 percent by the same period.

Statistics Canada emphasizes that migratory increase will be a primary driver of Canada's population growth, continuing a trend observed since the 1990s. Conversely, natural increase (births minus deaths) is expected to play a marginal role due to population aging and low fertility rates, which align with demographic trends observed in numerous other countries.

These projections underscore Canada's evolving demographic landscape and provide insights into future challenges and opportunities related to population dynamics, immigration policies, and socioeconomic planning.
