Ukraine experiences extensive power outages amid Russia’s intensified bombing

(MENAFN) A British newspaper reported that Ukrainians are experiencing extensive power outages across the country due to continued Russian attacks on vital infrastructure over the weekend. In recent months, Moscow has escalated its assaults on Ukraine's energy grid.
The report cites a statement from the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy, which confirmed that Ukrainian energy facilities were subjected to a massive Russian attack on Saturday evening. This assault resulted in injuries to several workers and severely impacted the energy sector, which the ministry described as being in a "very difficult" state.
Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that Russia had damaged or destroyed more than half of Ukraine's power plants, leading to the worst power outages since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
In his address, Zelensky urged Western allies to expedite the delivery of air defense systems, stating that modern air defense systems like Patriot missiles, rapid training for Ukrainian pilots on F-16s, and sufficient weapon range are crucial. Ukraine has been implementing rolling blackouts since May 15, with entire areas of the capital disconnected from the grid to conserve energy. The country currently has at least four Patriot systems provided by the United States and Germany.
In response to Zelensky's repeated requests for more defensive weapons, Germany, Romania, and the United States have pledged to send additional Patriot systems to Kiev. Additionally, the Netherlands announced on Friday that, in cooperation with another unnamed country, it will supply Ukraine with another Patriot missile system. This contribution will bring the total number of Patriot systems to seven, a number Zelensky has deemed necessary to "secure our key urban centers" against Russian missile attacks.
