Iran forges energy cooperation with Kyrgyzstan at SCO ministerial meeting

(MENAFN) Iranian Minister of Energy, Ali-Akbar Mehrabian, and his Kyrgyz counterpart, Taalaibek Ibrayev, convened on the sidelines of a ministerial meeting hosted by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member countries, affirming mutual readiness to collaborate in energy projects, particularly in hydroelectric initiatives.

During the meeting, Minister Mehrabian expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations between Iran and Kyrgyzstan, highlighting Iran's willingness to engage extensively with Bishkek on various fronts. He underscored Iran's substantial energy potential, noting the country's annual generation of approximately 360 terawatt-hours of electricity.

In response, the Kyrgyz minister acknowledged Iran's capabilities in oil production and supply, while emphasizing his country's expertise in developing hydroelectric and small-scale power plants. This acknowledgment underscores Kyrgyzstan's interest in leveraging Iran's technological and engineering prowess in energy infrastructure.

Minister Mehrabian further outlined Iran's readiness to provide technical and engineering services, as well as equipment, in the energy sector. He proposed the idea of linking Uzbekistan's electricity grid with Turkmenistan and then Iran, facilitating regional electricity exchange, particularly beneficial during peak consumption periods in summer and winter.

The discussions reflect both countries' commitment to enhancing regional energy security and fostering closer economic ties within the SCO framework. Collaborative efforts in energy projects hold the promise of mutual development and stability, marking a significant step forward in Iran-Kyrgyzstan bilateral relations.
