Japanese Embassy Celebrates 70 Years Of Diplomatic Relations With Jordan

Amman, June 6 (Petra) - The Japanese Embassy, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of culinary Arts, hosted a cultural event on Wednesday evening at the residence of Japanese Ambassador Jiro Okuyama in Amman, to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Jordan.
The event featured an introduction to traditional Japanese cuisine, highlighting dishes recognized as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.
During the celebration, Ali Malhas, President of the Jordan Judo Federation and the Jordan Kendo Federation, was honored with the Foreign Minister's Commendations for 2023. This award acknowledges individuals and groups for outstanding achievements in international relations and contributions to strengthening friendships with Japan.
The Japanese ambassador noted the commendation recognized Malhas's "exceptional" efforts in promoting Japanese culture in Jordan through martial arts. The event also showcased Japanese food and beverages, known as washoku, which gained UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status in 2013 and has grown in popularity worldwide, including in Jordan.
Displays of Japanese dishes and beverages highlighted their cultural significance, reflecting the harmony with nature and traditional preparation methods passed down through Japan's history.
Malhas, who began teaching Iaido and Judo in 1993, established several Japanese martial arts federations in Jordan and elevated them to international competition standards and promoted women's participation. Under his guidance, two Jordanian athletes qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio and Tokyo.
