Azerbaijan's Baku Port Aims To Reduce Emissions By 2040


(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 26. Baku InternationalSea Trade Port (BISTP) plans to reduce emissions to zero within15–20 years, the port's executive director Eugene Seah said toEuronews, Trend reports.

“We recently completed a carbon footprint measurement, whichvalidated our hypothesis that ships account for almost 60 percentof total CO2 emissions. There are also emissions from vehicles andequipment in the port area. This research will help develop acomprehensive approach to reducing emissions. Perhaps in around15-20 years, we will reach net zero, or zero emissions,” EugeneSeah said.

According to him, BISTP wants to become an example for otherregional ports in implementing green procedures and work processesto reduce carbon emissions.

BISTP is implementing wastewater treatment measures as steps toprotect the environment.

“Our wastewater treatment system comprises five modulesutilizing rotating biological contactor (RBC) technology. Eachmodule is capable of treating 500 cubic meters of wastewater perday,” Eugene Seah said.

To note, BISTP is the only green port in the Caspian Sea, havingreceived the relevant documents from UN specialized structures.
