US educational institute kicks out pupils to shelter migrants

(MENAFN) In an unprecedented move, thousands of New York City public school students were abruptly shifted to remote learning on Wednesday as their school, James Madison High School, transformed its gymnasium into a temporary shelter for migrants previously housed in a Brooklyn tent city. The decision, prompted by an approaching storm predicted to bring winds of up to 70MPH, left students and teachers scrambling to evacuate their belongings by 5 PM on Tuesday.

City Hall spokeswoman Kayla Mamelak described the relocation as a "proactive measure" taken to ensure the safety of both the migrants and those working and living at the tent city, located five miles away at Floyd Bennett Field. The storm posed potential risks, prompting officials to utilize the school's facilities as a "temporary overnight respite center" for approximately 1,900 migrants.

While the move was framed as a precautionary step, details regarding the duration of the migrants' stay in the gymnasium were not clarified. Mamelak assured that essential services and support would be provided to the migrants during their occupancy of the school building, and the relocation would persist until weather conditions stabilized and the original facility became suitable for habitation once again.

This incident echoes past attempts by New York City Mayor Eric Adams to convert public school gyms into housing for migrants in the face of an influx of illegal immigrants last spring. The proposal sparked considerable opposition from parents concerned about the safety and vetting processes for cohabitation with unvetted adults of unknown origin. As the city grapples with the intersection of humanitarian concerns and educational disruptions, the incident raises broader questions about crisis response and preparedness in managing unforeseen challenges within urban environments.
