Expansive winter storm covers US, triggering ‘ferocious blizzard conditions’

(MENAFN) On Monday, drivers received urgent advisories to refrain from unnecessary travel as an expansive storm system blanketed the country with significant snowfall, prompting the National Weather Service to anticipate "ferocious blizzard conditions" persisting from Monday into Tuesday. The advisory, issued early Monday, highlighted the potential for up to 2 inches of snow per hour in the central and southern Plains, extending into the Midwest as the snowstorm progressed.

Massachusetts, having already accumulated a foot of snow by Sunday afternoon, witnessed widespread power outages affecting 13,000 homes, a number that had reduced to 5,600 by Monday morning. Hazardous conditions and snowfall are predicted to persist in the interior Northeast throughout Tuesday, while a blizzard is expected to impact the Plains region, encompassing northeast New Mexico, eastern Colorado, the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles, western Kansas, and southwest Nebraska.

The National Weather Service cautioned that wind gusts reaching 60-70 mph would create perilous blizzard conditions, resulting in whiteouts and rendering travel extremely dangerous, if not impossible. The advisory further emphasized the importance of preparing a winter survival kit, given the anticipated wind chills plummeting below zero.

In addition to the winter weather concerns, the weather service issued warnings of a high risk of severe thunderstorms across the central Gulf Coast on Monday night into Tuesday. The forecast included the potential for very strong winds, possible tornadoes, and a heightened risk of significant flash flooding, extending into Wednesday and possibly affecting a considerable portion of the East Coast.

Amidst these weather-related challenges, a distressing incident occurred at a popular flea market in Fairfax, California, where a girl was pinned by a tree uprooted by strong winds on Sunday. According to a Los Angeles-based news agency, the girl received treatment at a hospital, though her current condition was not immediately available as of Monday morning.
