US Suspends Most Aid To Gabon - State Department

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Oct 24 (KUNA) -- The US State Department on Tuesday said it would pause most aid to Gabon except for humanitarian assistance, citing the decision was reached after concluding that the African country had underwent a coup.
"The US has concluded that a military coup d'أ©tat has taken place in Gabon," US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement, pointing out that Washington would be suspending most assistance to the government of Gabon as a consequence.
In the aftermath of the coup, the US "stands with the Gabonese people in their aspirations for democracy, prosperity, and stability," added the statement.
Gabon's African neighbors have moved to isolate the country after the coup, with the African Union suspending its membership in response to the events. (end)
