Doha, Qatar: The College of health Sciences (CHC), under the umbrella of Qatar University (QU) Health, have launched a new Bachelor of Science programme in Speech and Language Pathology, that will be housed in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences. The programme is open for both male and female student admission starting Fall 2023.
The Speech and Language Pathology programme aims to equip graduates with the highest level of education and practical skills in speech and language pathology. Graduating with a BSc in Speech and Language Pathology and obtaining the required training will enable graduates to provide quality services for those with communication, swallowing and hearing disorders in different institutions in Qatar, including hospitals, schools, centres for children with disabilities, and private clinics.

Vice President for Health and Medical Sciences, Prof. Asma Al Thani, said in a statement,“The launch of the Bachelor of Science in Speech and Language Pathology program represents an important step towards developing our programs with the health needs of the country. We are committed to providing outstanding education and high-quality training to students who will become specialists in this vital field, and we seek to equip students in the health and medical sciences sector with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to serve the community and improve people's lives through care, support, and rehabilitation services. CHC Dean and an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health, Dr. Hanan Abdul Rahim, said:“We are delighted and proud to launch the Bachelor of Speech and Language Pathology program. There is a very great need for speech and language therapy services, and we at the College of Health Sciences are always working to align our programs with the urgent health needs of the country, which includes rehabilitation services. I am very grateful to the colleagues in the Department of Speech Pathology at Hamad Medical Corporation, who worked closely with us to design this program to the highest standards, and I am also grateful to the colleagues at Qatar University and within the College of Health Sciences who worked sincerely with us to make this possible. We will continue to collaborate closely as we train the next generation of speech therapists.”
Chief of the Speech Therapy Department at HMC, Eman Yousef Al Mulla, said“It is my pleasure to congratulate my beloved country Qatar and every citizen and resident in it on this achievement. Congratulations to Qatar University and Hamad Medical Corporation as well on this valuable and fruitful collaboration. It has been an honor to be the only Qatari speech-language pathologist in the entire country for the past twenty years, and I feel very proud to be part of developing and establishing this very important national project in the field of rehabilitation.”
Head of the Rehabilitation Sciences Department and an Assistant Professor in Physiotherapy, Dr. Linzette D. Morris, said,“The new Speech and Language Pathology programme will join the department's existing undergraduate physiotherapy program as the first and only entry-to-practice programs in Qatar. By offering these rehabilitation-specific programs, the department and the College are committed to assisting the healthcare sector to meet the growing needs for rehabilitation services in Qatar. We look forward to working closely with stakeholders such as Hamad Medical Corporation, Primary Health Care Corporation, Sidra Medicine, and Aspetar to ensure the development of a successful program.”
Students who wish to transfer from another department or major at QU must meet all admission requirements and will undergo the transfer process as per QU regulations.
