Brigadier Firas Doueiri, director of the traffic police at the Public Security Department, presented a comprehensive insight into the growing economic impact of road accidents on Jordan's economy – a concerning 350 million Jordanian dinars annually.
In an in-depth session at the Yarmouk University, as part of their Youth Summer 2023 program on "Traffic Safety," Doueiri elaborated on the upcoming amendments to the Traffic Law.
The primary goal of these changes, Doueiri highlighted, is to substantially reduce road mishaps, thereby protecting citizens and their assets. He emphasized, "These revisions, driven by royal directives, reflect our intensified approach to combat the escalating menace of traffic incidents."
Last year's statistics reveal the gravity of the issue: Jordan witnessed 169,409 traffic-related incidents, resulting in 562 deaths and 17,096 injuries, incurring an economic toll of 322 million dinars.
Worryingly, individuals aged between 18-35 were majorly impacted, representing 46% of the injury cases and causing 43% of total accidents.
Shedding light on the causes, Doueiri stated that human errors account for a staggering 98.8% of all accidents. The prevalent mistakes encompass lane violations, not adhering to safe driving distances, and a lack of necessary precautions on roads.
The traffic department, Doueiri mentioned, is keenly focused on leveraging technological innovations to address and manage traffic issues more efficiently.
Concluding his address, Doueiri called for collective responsibility and adherence to traffic laws. He advocated for public awareness, the importance of seat belts, observance of speed limits, and the dangers of using mobile phones behind the wheel.
The event also showcased a compelling performance by the Directorate of Media and Community Police's theatre team, "Stop Bleeding on Roads," driving home the severe implications of traffic accidents on human lives and the economy.
