'Tiktok, WeChat pose greatest national security danger to Australia
(MENAFN) TikTok and WeChat, two social media apps, may pose the greatest national security danger to Australia, according to the findings of a committee investigating the misuse of social media as a way of foreign intervention in the nation.
According to Australia Broadcasting Company, the wide-ranging research offered 17 suggestions, including implementing new legislation to guarantee all platforms function under transparency criteria or be barred from usage across the nation.
It asserted that foreign intervention is Australia's "principal national security threat" and that "emerging technologies" like AI make it simpler to breach its security.
The committee seems to be especially worried about the threat to national security presented by social media services like TikTok as well as WeChat.
Both ByteDance and Tencent's parent firms have headquarters in and operate out of China.
"China's 2017 National Intelligence Law means the Chinese government can require these social media companies to secretly cooperate with Chinese intelligence agencies," as stated by the report.
