Iran Executes Swedish-Iranian Dual National Accused of Leading Separatist Group

(MENAFN) On Saturday, Iran carried out the execution of Habib Farajullah Chaab, a Swedish-Iranian dual national accused of leading the Harakat al-Nidal separatist group. The group has been blamed by Tehran for a series of attacks in the country, including an attack in Ahvaz in 2018 that killed 25 people. The judiciary's Mizan News referred to Chaab as the "mastermind" of the Ahvaz attack.

The attack in Ahvaz took place on September 22, 2018 when militants posing as soldiers opened fire on an annual military parade in the capital of Khuzestan province. At the time, Iran accused Saudi Arabia and Israeli intelligence agencies of involvement in the attack.

According to Mizan News, Chaab was responsible for planning and executing several other attacks in Iran. The focus of the group he led was to carry out "assassinations and bombings" in southwestern Iran. He was arrested in November 2020 and brought to Iran from abroad. In March, Iran's apex court upheld the death penalty against him after multiple court hearings. He was charged with "corruption on earth", which carries the maximum legal punishment under Iranian law.

Chaab's execution has drawn criticism from the Swedish government. Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom expressed dismay over the execution, stating that his government had urged Tehran not to carry out the sentence. He also condemned the use of the death penalty as an "inhuman and irreversible punishment", and emphasized that Sweden, along with the rest of the EU, opposes its use under all circumstances.

The case of Habib Farajullah Chaab highlights the ongoing tensions between Iran and other countries in the region, particularly Saudi Arabia and Israel. It also raises concerns about the treatment of dual nationals in Iran, who have been subjected to arbitrary arrest and detention in recent years. The execution of Chaab is likely to further strain Iran's relations with Sweden and other European countries, and could lead to further diplomatic fallout in the region.
