(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, April 11 (KUNA) - The European Union Tuesday underlined that Schengen border controls must remain "exceptional, strictly limited in time and the measure of last resort."
This position was expressed by EU spokesperson for Interior Affairs Anitta Hipper, at a press conference in Brussels after Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner announced today that he plans to extend checks at its borders with Hungary and Slovenia by a further six months from May 11 to November.
The minister argued that the border controls were necessary to combat illegal migration.
Austria has border controls in place till 11 May, said Hippe and noted that "we still need to assess the notification once we receive it (from Austria)."
She added that that the European Commission is currently working with all EU member states to address long-lasting reduction of Schengen border checks.
Meanwhile, the EU Court of Justice ruled last year that the prolongation of border controls based on the same reasons for more than six months goes against the Schengen Borders Code and is illegal. (end)
