Turkish, Ukrainian Ministers Discuss Black Sea Grain Deal

(MENAFN) The Turkish National Defense Minister, Hulusi Akar, and Ukraine's Infrastructure Minister, Oleksandr Kubrakov, held a phone call on Friday to discuss the Black Sea grain deal. The Turkish National Defense Ministry issued a statement indicating that the two ministers exchanged views on ensuring the smooth operation of the grain corridor. They also expressed satisfaction with the work carried out at the Joint Coordination Center in Istanbul.

Last July, Türkiye, the United Nations, Russia, and Ukraine signed a deal in Istanbul to resume grain exports from three Ukrainian Black Sea ports. The exports had been paused after the Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022. The resumption of grain exports was a significant step towards normalizing trade relations between the two countries.

To oversee the shipments, a Joint Coordination Center was set up in Istanbul with officials from the three countries and the United Nations. The center was tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of the grain corridor and facilitating the movement of goods between Ukraine and Turkey.

Since the resumption of grain exports, some 866 ships have carried more than 27 million tons of grain through the Black Sea corridor. The successful operation of the grain corridor has been a positive development for both Turkey and Ukraine. It has helped to boost trade between the two countries and has provided a much-needed source of revenue for Ukrainian farmers.

The call between the Turkish and Ukrainian ministers underscores the importance of cooperation between the two countries. It highlights the need for continued efforts to strengthen trade relations and promote economic growth in the region. The successful operation of the grain corridor is a testament to the benefits of international cooperation and the importance of working together to overcome challenges. As the two countries continue to face uncertainty and geopolitical challenges, it is crucial for leaders to work towards building strong partnerships and promoting stability in the region.
