Yemenis Stranded as Egypt Implements New Travel Restrictions

(MENAFN) Egypt has recently implemented new travel restrictions that prevent Yemenis from traveling to the country. The new regulations require Yemeni passengers to obtain an authentic medical report from an Egyptian hospital in order to enter the country, whereas previously they only needed a medical report from a Yemeni medical facility recognized by Yemen's Health Ministry. The restrictions have caused significant distress and stranded scores of Yemeni passengers at Cairo airport, including sick people.

Almost 60 Yemeni travelers who arrived at Cairo on Sunday without the new requirement were denied entry and forced to return to Yemen's Aden airport. Social media videos have shown men, women, and children with their bags stranded at Cairo airport, with many pleading for their situation to be resolved. Yemenia officials stated that they were notified of the new regulations after flight 601 had left Aden airport for Cairo, leaving passengers unaware of the new requirements.

The Yemeni government has been working to convince the Egyptian authorities to lift the new restrictions, which have caused significant disruptions to Yemenis' travel plans. Yemeni travelers with the Yemenia airline from Yemen to Cairo airport have been required to carry a medical report from a Yemeni medical facility recognized by Yemen's Health Ministry for years. Each traveler is issued a visa upon arrival at Cairo International Airport. However, the Egyptian authorities revised the requirement over the weekend, causing confusion and frustration among Yemeni passengers.

The situation has drawn attention to the plight of Yemenis who have been facing immense challenges due to the ongoing conflict in their country. Yemen has been embroiled in a civil war since 2015, with the Houthi rebels fighting against the internationally recognized government. The conflict has led to a humanitarian crisis, with millions of people facing food and medical shortages, and displacement.

The new travel restrictions have added to the difficulties faced by Yemenis, as Egypt is a critical transit point for many Yemenis traveling abroad for medical treatment, education, and work. The restrictions have raised concerns about the impact on Yemenis' access to essential services and opportunities.

In conclusion, the new travel restrictions implemented by Egypt have caused significant distress and stranded Yemeni passengers at Cairo airport. The Yemeni government is working to convince the Egyptian authorities to lift the restrictions, which have added to the difficulties faced by Yemenis due to the ongoing conflict in their country. The situation highlights the need for greater support and assistance to address the humanitarian crisis faced by Yemenis.
