Azerbaijan Accuses Armenia of Disrupting Peace Process, Endangering Regional Stability

(MENAFN) Tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia have risen over Armenian military movements in Karabakh, with Azerbaijan accusing Armenia of trying to "purposefully disrupt the peace process" and endangering regional stability.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry said that its military had taken "appropriate control measures" near the Lachin road to prevent illegal Armenian activities and "potential provocations." The ministry also called for the establishment of a border control checkpoint between Azerbaijan and Armenia at the end point of the Lachin road to prevent further provocations.

Azerbaijan has accused Armenia of intensifying military movements, including the transport of personnel, weapons, and other equipment through Azerbaijani territories where Russian peacekeepers are temporarily deployed. The ministry also stated that illegal road construction works by Armenians on the Khankendi-Khalfali-Turshsu road and Khankendi-Kosalar-Mirzeler-Turshsu road have been recorded, despite numerous appeals from Azerbaijan to prevent the transport of weapons and military equipment.

The statement also referred to the March 5 killing of two Azerbaijani soldiers who were shot dead by Armenian forces when they tried to stop vehicles for an inspection on the Khankendi-Khalfali-Turshsu road.

The tension between the two countries comes after the recent conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed region located within Azerbaijan. The six-week conflict ended in November 2020 with a ceasefire agreement brokered by Russia, but tensions have continued to simmer.

The situation highlights the ongoing challenges in the region and the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflicts. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the coming days and weeks, and whether both sides will take necessary steps to de-escalate tensions and work towards a lasting peace.
