Australian Woman Finds Venomous Eastern Brown Snake Sleeping in Her Bed

(MENAFN) An Australian woman got the shock of her life on Monday when she discovered a six-foot-long Eastern Brown snake sleeping in her bed. The Eastern Brown is considered one of the most venomous snakes in the world, and images of the massive reptile quickly went viral on social media after professional snake catcher Zachary Richards, of Zachery's Snake and Reptile Relocation, posted them following the call-out.

Richards told CBS News that he was called to the scene in the tiny rural town of Maroon, in Queensland, to safely remove the snake. Upon arriving, he found the homeowner waiting outside with the door to the bedroom shut and a towel underneath it to prevent the snake from escaping. When he pushed the door open, he found the snake lying in bed looking at him.

According to Richards, the snake likely entered the house through an open door in search of shelter or a comfortable place to sleep. He praised the homeowner for taking the right steps to safely contain the snake before calling him for assistance.

Richards advised that if someone sees a snake, they should leave it alone, back away from it, and confine it to one room if it is safe to do so. This makes it easier for snake catchers to locate the reptile.

After safely removing the snake, Richards released it in nearby bushland, away from other residences. Eastern Brown snakes are widespread in eastern Australia, as their name suggests. This species is responsible for causing more deaths from snake bites than any other species of snake in Australia, according to the Australian museum.

The venom of the Eastern Brown snake contains powerful neurotoxins that can cause progressive paralysis and uncontrolled bleeding if a human is bitten and not treated. The neurotoxin can shut down the victim's heart, diaphragm, and lungs, leading to suffocation. It is crucial to take precautions when living in areas where venomous snakes are present, such as keeping doors closed and seeking professional help in case of an encounter with a snake.
