Danish military dives near Nord Stream 2 Pipeline after suspicious object found

(MENAFN) Reports suggest that the Royal Danish Navy is currently engaged in a diving operation to the east of Bornholm island, in close proximity to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline that was damaged by a blast last year. According to Danish newspaper Berlingske, a Flyvefisken-class patrol vessel, typically utilized for military diving operations, was spotted in the area along with two other military ships. While the Danish military has confirmed their presence in the area, they have not commented on the specific mission of these ships.

These recent developments follow an announcement by Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Rasmussen, wherein he confirmed his government's ability to verify a report from Gazprom, the Russian gas giant that operates the undersea pipeline, regarding the discovery of a mysterious object near Nord Stream 2. Gazprom had sent images of the object to Danish authorities, while the Russian embassy made a formal inquiry into the matter. Rasmussen pledged to take the discovery seriously and investigate it further.

In a recent television interview, Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned the object and suggested that it may be an antenna used in remotely detonating a charge. The object was reportedly found during a Gazprom survey roughly 30 kilometers away from the site where the Nord Stream 2 pipeline was breached. The presence of the Royal Danish Navy in the area may indicate that further investigation into the incident is underway.
