Maine man arrested for planning to wear latex mask during Manhattan murder

(MENAFN) Federal authorities have arrested Hyunkook Korsiak, a 41-year-old Maine man who was allegedly planning to commit murder in Manhattan. According to a federal criminal complaint, undercover FBI agents had been communicating with Korsiak after intercepting communications in which he allegedly expressed his desire to make money for killing someone. The agents posed as members of a "transnational criminal organization" and approached Korsiak in August 2022, asking him to murder a fictitious businessman in a Manhattan hotel.

Korsiak was arrested on Wednesday night in a hotel parking lot after the undercover FBI agents handed him USD25,000 in cash to commit the murder, according to the complaint. He was carrying a loaded Sig Sauer 9MM pistol in a black holster and the USD25,000 in cash upon his arrest. His car, which he had driven down from Maine for the alleged murder, contained a small arsenal of weapons, including AR-15 rifles, 9MM pistols, a bullet-resistant vest, and hundreds of rounds of various caliber ammunition.

The complaint also stated that federal agents had provided Korsiak with a full-size latex mask, which he had requested during an earlier meeting and was planning on wearing during the murder to disguise himself. Korsiak had tried on the mask "to ensure" it fit properly, and he was planning on leaving the mask behind at the crime scene.

In an earlier meeting with the undercover agents, Korsiak was allegedly given USD5,000 in expense money, and he had planned to clean the inside of the car with a pressurized bleach spray to remove any forensic evidence. The complaint further stated that Korsiak had requested silencers and a police uniform to use during the murder-for-hire.

Korsiak has a lengthy criminal record in Maine, having served more than two years in state prison in 2011 and having been sentenced to 52 months in 2018 for stealing guns. He was released from prison in November 2021, according to prison records. Korsiak is now charged with one count of murder-for-hire and one count of possession of a firearm.
