WHO: world is seeing largest cholera outbreak in 20 years
(MENAFN) The World health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning after noting a sharp increase in the illness in at least 30 countries. These factors, which include economic crises, climate change, and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, have created the ideal conditions for cholera to flourish in high-risk countries.
After several years of reduction, the extent of the various epidemics suddenly increased in the last year, according to the WHO. 29 nations reported instances of the disease between January and October of last year, up from 23 the year before, and more countries are expected to record cases in this year.
“The number of countries with these large outbreaks occurring at the same time, we have not seen it in at least 20 years,” The Telegraph was informed by Philippe Barboza, chief of the WHO's cholera crises response team.
“Most of the major outbreaks we are looking at are all driven by major, unusual climate events,” he claimed, mentioning that the nations of southern Africa are especially at risk since they are going to have cyclones and heavy rain for a third consecutive year due to the La Nina weather phenomena.
