Protesters demand end to weapons shipments to Ukraine outside Ramstein airbase

(MENAFN) On Sunday, hundreds of protesters gathered outside Ramstein United States airbase in southwestern Germany to call for an end to the shipment of weapons to Ukraine. The airbase is a frequent location for Western officials to meet and coordinate aid to Ukraine.

The protesters also demanded that hostilities between Ukraine and Russia cease and that peace talks begin. The demonstration was accompanied by chants and drumming, and banners with slogans such as “Freedom to Julian Assange” and “Stop the weapons deliveries” were visible. Several placards also featured the Russian and Soviet flags, while others called for the Americans to leave.

The organizers of the rally had informed local authorities of the expected attendance of around 2,000 from midday to 5:30 pm. Ramstein air base has been the focus of attention since Russia began its military campaign against Ukraine a year ago. It serves as the site for the United States-led Ukraine Defence Contact Group meetings, which aim to strengthen the Ukrainian military, with the most recent gathering occurring on January 20.
