MANAMA, Feb 21 (KUNA) -- Bahrain's King Hamad bin Issa Al-Khalifa hailed on Tuesday a humanitarian award given by the Gulf Arab kingdom as an effort to usher in unity and stability, saying the prize aims to acknowledge some notable acts of philanthropy.
The sheikh Isa Award for Service and Humanity acknowledges some of the most prominent individuals in the humanitarian arena, naming renowned Nepalese ophthalmologist Dr. Sanduk Ruit as the recipient of the prize this year.
The physician, who shot to fame for restoring the sight of over 180,000 people across Africa and Asia, expressed his elation over bagging the award, saying the prize is an emblem of humanity.
The Isa Award is granted every two years to either individuals or organizations who have been selected through a 'grueling process by an expert panel of jurists,' according to the award's website. (end)
