Woman escapes after nearly a year of being held captive by a man in multiple states

(MENAFN) A woman, whose identity has not been disclosed by law enforcement, managed to escape from a man accused of kidnapping and abusing her in multiple states over nearly a year. The New Jersey attorney general's office reported that she fled to a gas station in New Jersey on February 7, where police arrested 57-year-old James W. Parrillo Jr. shortly after. Parrillo is now facing several charges, including kidnapping, strangulation, aggravated assault, criminal restraint, and is being held in detention until his trial.

According to court documents, Parrillo allegedly abducted the woman in February 2022 when they met at a gas station in New Mexico. Using the alias Brett Parker, he asked her to drive him to Arizona, and they entered into a voluntary relationship that lasted for a month before he physically assaulted her for the first time in California. The woman claimed she couldn't leave the relationship as Parrillo had confiscated her phone and debit cards and isolated her from her family.

They continued to travel together throughout the country, eventually arriving in New Jersey in December. The attorney general's office believes they stayed in a rented residence in Bass River Township, where Parrillo allegedly physically assaulted the woman, causing her to escape. Parrillo stopped assaulting her when he realized others were in the residence, and the woman fled wearing only shorts and a shirt in the 42-degree weather.

The woman had noticed a deadbolt on the interior side of the entrance door to a gas station near the Bass River rental on a previous day. After escaping Parrillo, she ran to the gas station, locked the door, and told the attendant that she had been kidnapped for nearly a year. Security footage revealed that Parrillo followed the woman to the gas station and attempted to open the door before leaving the premises.
