Ukraine will receive tanks, UK PM reveals

(MENAFN) In a Saturday phone chat with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promised that Britain is going to provide Challenger 2 tanks to Kiev. The United Kingdom is going to be the first nation to send tanks produced in the West to Ukraine as a result of the action.

Sunak and Zelensky agreed "on the need to seize on this moment with an acceleration of global military and diplomatic support to Ukraine," according to a news release issued by the PM's office after the call.

It was made apparent by the British prime minister that London is going to give Kiev "Challenger 2 tanks and additional artillery systems." Other European countries, including Poland, made "commitments in this vein," which were appreciated by the two presidents.

The Guardian claimed on Friday that 10 Downing Street was getting ready to make an official statement on Monday on plans to send tanks, citing Ukrainian sources.

The newspaper's sources indicate that the 10 units the United Kingdom is purportedly willing to send would not likely have much of an influence on the dynamics of the battlefield. The newspaper at the time asserted that the action would probably encourage Germany to pressure its European partners into permitting the sale of its Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
