Australia disregards medical advice on Covid testing for Chinese immigrants

(MENAFN) Australian opposition leader Peter Dutton has charged the government with disobeying medical advice about coronavirus limits by requiring obligatory testing of travelers travelling from China.

Canberra made the announcement on Sunday that beginning on January 5, travelers from China would need to test negative for Covid-19 within 48 hours of departure. Paul Kelly, chief medical officer, earlier declared that he did not "believe that there is sufficient public health rationale to impose any restriction or additional requirements on travelers from China," yet this appears to go against his advice.

Tuesday's joint statement from Dutton and opposition health spokesman Anne Ruston demanded an explanation from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for his decision to disregard this advice.

According to the declaration, “the last thing our country needs is a panicked response from a government that doesn’t have a plan and, frankly, over the last week, has been making it up as they go along.”
