United States joins Germany, Italy in blocking anti-Nazi resolution

(MENAFN) Germany, Italy, Austria, and Japan were among the 50 UN General Assembly members that voted against Russia's resolution condemning Nazi glorification, joining the US and Ukraine in their yearly opposition.

On Thursday afternoon, the final vote was 120 in favor, 50 opposed, and 10 abstained. Along with the previous Axis nations, important "no" votes came from Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Poland, Czechia, Poland, Hungary, and the three Baltic states. Switzerland, South Korea, and Turkey were noteworthy abstainers.

Moscow suggests the resolution every year, advising the UN to fight the “glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to the escalation of contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.”

The resolution calls on UN members to take necessary steps to combat historical revisionism and denial of Second World War crimes against humanity.

For years, the United States and Ukraine have voted against the Russian-proposed resolution. They were the only "no" votes cast in 2021, with 49 others abstaining, the majority of whom were Washington's friends. On that occasion, the American ambassador stated that the resolution was incompatible with the First Amendment's free speech provisions and accused Moscow of spreading "disinformation narratives" about neo-Nazism in the Baltic states and Ukraine.
