Iran’s MP replies to statement from GCC around Persian Gulf islands


(MENAFN) A senior Iranian politician has responded to the mutual announcement of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) as well as China in which the two parties urged for discussions around the three Iranian Persian Gulf islands.

The presidents of the GCC member states and China hosted a conference in the Capital of Saudi Arabia on December 9, 2022. Following the conference, the presidents of the GCC member states and China released a mutual declaration that triggered a Political kerfuffle in Iran as it urged for a “peaceful solution” to the problem of the three islands Iran states the Sovereignty around which is not up for discussions.

The mutual announcement stated that, “The leaders affirmed their support for all peaceful efforts, including the initiative and endeavours of the United Arab Emirates to reach a peaceful solution to the issue of the three islands; Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa, through bilateral negotiations in accordance with the rules of international law, and to resolve this issue in accordance with international legitimacy.”
