US wary of supplying Ukraine with cluster bombs

(MENAFN) According to a person familiar with the situation, Politico reported on Friday that Washington is not "actively considering" supplying cluster bombs to Kiev. The deployment of this kind of weapon by Ukrainian soldiers in the city of Kherson in October reportedly resulted in the deaths of four people, according to Russian law enforcement officials.

Based on the claims by Foreign Policy magazine, Ukraine has been asking for the United States’ stockpile of Cold War-era bombs since at least late September. The United States-made cluster bombs, like the majority of other kinds, have the potential to leave behind unexploded submunitions that civilians may unintentionally come upon.

The 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), which was ratified by the majority of European Union states but not by the United States, Ukraine, or Russia, outlawed these weapons.

John Kirby, the spokesperson for the United States National Security Council, told reporters on Friday without addressing Kiev's request in particular, “according to our own policy, we have concerns about the use of those kinds of munitions.”
