'Attack On Press Freedom': Detention Of Journalists In Khyber Draws Strong Condemnation


(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) Spokesperson for Tehreek Mutasireen Tirah in Khyber, Sohbat Afridi, has strongly condemned the alleged unlawful detention and torture of senior journalist Qazi Rauf Afridi of Bara Press Club and other journalists.

In his statement, Sohbat Afridi said that keeping journalists in illegal confinement for several hours and subjecting them to mistreatment is not only condemnable but also a shameful act.

He added that Tehreek Mutasireen Tirah strongly condemns the incident and considers it an attack on press freedom.

He stated that after covering the protest held in front of the Khyber DPO office yesterday, CTD personnel detained senior journalist Qazi Rauf Afridi along with other journalists and kept them in custody for several hours before releasing them.

According to Sohbat Afridi, journalists are the voice of society, and such treatment toward them falls under the category of a violation of the law. He said that the action of the CTD in Khyber district is not only regrettable but also raises serious questions about freedom of the press.

He further demanded that the higher authorities immediately take notice of the unlawful act and bring the officials involved in the incident to justice.
