World Anticipates Turkey's Military Operation In North Syria With Different Reactions

ISTANBUL, Dec 10 (KUNA) -- There is an anticipation for the impact of the military operation that Turkey threatened to execute in northern Syria, as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised to end all terrorist threats on the country's borders.
The US Senior Representative to Northeast Syria Nikolas Granger warned against the impact of such an action, noting that Washington did not give the green light for Turkey to execute the operation.
The news announced by Turkey two weeks ago were met by several regional and international reactions, as experts expect it will happen soon.
The Turkish operation will target Ayn Al-Arab District, Tell Rifaat, Ayn Issa and Manbij, as Ankara says attacks against Turkey are launched from these areas.
In this context, strategic expert Ismail Kaban told KUNA on Saturday that Turkey is trying to benefit from the current international political situation and the different world views regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war, especially that both the US and Russia are trying to win the Turkish support.
Ankara is still taking its time in launching the military operation, in hopes of reaching a mutual agreement with the US and Russia on the matter, he noted.
Turkey is currently aiming to resolve the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) file, which Ankara labels as a terrorist organization, as well as the issue of the Syrian refugees' voluntary return to their homes.
There are several scenarios expected for the operation, with the main one being that Turkey would reach an agreement with Russia on the withdrawal of Kurdish units from Turkey's border areas by 30 km deep and allowing the Syrian government army to spread across the area.
Turkish and Russian officials held meetings on 8 and 9 December to discuss the operation and Moscow's efforts to normalize relations with Ankara and Damascus.
There are reports that Russia is trying to convince Qasad militias to withdraw from Turkey's bordering areas to be replaced with the Syrian army to avoid military escalation.
Meanwhile, Ankara is looking into a Russian proposition on withdrawing Qasad from from Ayn Al-Arab and Manbij in Aleppo, while the Asayesh forces belonging to Qasad would stay, only after becoming under the Syrian regime's security body. The step is a Russian attempt to avoid the Turkish military operation in the area.
It is not clear yet if Turkey will execute air raids only or also resolve to land operations, should the country decide to launch the military operation. Ankara hadn't reached a decision yet, especially that it requires the approval of both the US and Russia on the matter. (end)
