NATO Chief Warns Not To Underestimate Russian Military Capabilities

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Nov 14 (KUNA) - NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg Monday said that Russia's withdrawal from Kherson demonstrates the 'incredible courage of the Ukrainian armed forces,' and the 'importance of our continued support to Ukraine'.
But he stressed that 'we should not make the mistake of underestimating Russia. '
'The Russian armed forces retain significant capabilities, as well as a large number of troops. And Russia has demonstrated the willingness to bear significant losses, 'he told a joint press conference at the Hague with Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Wopke Hoekstra, and the Dutch Minister of Defence Kajsa Ollongren.
Stoltenberg thanked the Netherlands for its contributions to NATO's Comprehensive Assistance Package for Ukraine, and also welcomed that the Netherlands will provide another 120 million euros (USD 123 million) of assistance to Ukraine.
'The current conflict also shows the importance of diversifying our energy supplies and protecting our critical infrastructure,' he said.
On his part, Hoekstra, said the Netherlands along with the EU and NATO will continue to support Ukraine.
'We will continue our unwavering support to Ukraine,' he stressed but noted that the war in Ukraine will not end in next weeks or months but will continue for the foreseeable future.
On her part, Ollongren said that the liberation of Kherson shows that NATO's Ukraine strategy is working.
'It shows that our military support is working and that Ukraine can succeed in the battlefield, and that Putin has not achieved any of his goals,' she added. (end)
