Toxins are sprayed on Palestinian-owned olive trees by Israeli settlers
(MENAFN) In the occupied West Bank, Israeli settlers have targeted Palestinian-owned farmed property and sprayed olive trees with pesticides during the harvest season.
According to Ghassan Daghlas, a Palestinian official who monitors settlement activity, the event occurred in the village of Jaloud, near the southern city of Nablus, according to Palestine's official Wafa news agency on Monday.
The settlers infiltrated the land and sprayed 60 trees, destroying them all.
Settlers led by Israeli military have recently increased raids into Palestinian olive-growing territory.
During the olive harvest season every year, aggressive settlers impede Palestinian farmers' movements toward their fields, often causing damage or theft to their harvests. They also frequently set fire to or chop down trees.
Palestinian farmers rely heavily on olives for a living. Between October and November, the harvest season provides a lifeline for 80,000 to 100,000 Palestinian households in the West Bank.
According to UN figures, about half of Palestinian agricultural land in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip is planted with an estimated 10 million olive trees.
