Nepal earthquake leaves 6 deaths so far


(MENAFN) According to officials, more than six people died and many others wounded after a magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit the Himalayan nation of Nepal.

As said by police officials, Doti region in western Nepal was destroyed.

Nepal's National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center stated a tremor with a magnitude of 6.6 hit the area around Khaptad Baba Ashram in Doti District at 02:12 AM local time.

Nepal Police Spokesman Tek Prasad Rai updated Anadolu Agency that six people had been killed and said the death toll might carry on increasing.

"There are a few people injured. Houses have suffered damage as well," he added. "A rescue operation is going on in the area."

Monika Jha, a top official at Nepal's National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center, noted there was a pre-shock and aftershock too.

"We are in high alert, as there is a huge seismic gap in the western part of Nepal Himalaya," she informed Anadolu Agency.
