International investment bankers remain optimistic about Chinese economy

(MENAFN) Despite alarming headlines in the Western media, international investment bankers remain optimistic about the Chinese economy, according to Colm Kelleher, chairman of UBS Bank.

After more than two and a half years of Covid restrictions there, Kelleher was speaking at the Global Financial Leaders Investment Summit in Hong Kong, which brought together more than 200 bankers as well as investors from 20 nations. According to reports, Hong Kong is now working to strengthen its position as a global financial center.

“We’re not reading the American press, we actually buy the [China] story,” he claimed, as cited by the Financial Times. “But it is a bit of waiting for zero-Covid to open up in China to see what will happen.”

Kelleher's mention to the media, according to the Financial Times, was "an apparent joke and a nod" to previous statements made by Fang Xinghai, deputy head of the China Securities Regulatory Commission.
