Indonesia Embassy, ALZI Doha Highlight Caring For People With Alzheimer's

Doha: In commemoration of September's World Alzheimer's Month 2022, Alzheimer's Indonesia Chapter Doha - Qatar (ALZI Doha) held a talk show entitled“The Journey of Caring” at the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Doha on Friday.

The activity was led by the Chairperson of ALZI Doha, Dr. Ken Lestariyani Sulis, in collaboration with the Indonesian embassy in Doha.

Dr. Sulis said that the participation of young volunteers from the Indonesian Student Association in Qatar on this occasion, bears witness to youth engagement and inter-generational collaboration which has always been promoted by Alzheimer's Indonesia since 2016. 

The talk show also performed a Brain Gym session as a form of brain stimulation to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

In his speech, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Doha, H E Ridwan Hassan, expressed his appreciation for organising this inspiring event which was attended by Indonesian citizens with various professional backgrounds. 

In addition, the Ambassador conveyed the results of a study from Alzheimer's Disease International that every three seconds, there is one person in the world that develops dementia. In Indonesia, there were around 1.2 million people with dementia in 2016, which is projected to increase to two million in 2030 and four million in 2050.

The talk show featured well known speaker, Dr. Mani Chandran, a Senior Consultant Geriatric Psychiatrist from Hamad Medical Corporation, representing Dr. Hanadi Al Hamad (Medical Director of Rumaillah Hospital and the Qatar Institute of Rehabilitation as well as the WHO Focal Point of Global Dementia Observatory and Healthy Ageing).

Dr. Chandran explained that there are at least 10 ways to reduce the risk of dementia. Some are being physically active, making healthy food choices, reducing stress, and continuously challenging the brain by learning something new.

The event was also attended by Dy Suharya, the founder of Alzheimer's Indonesia and Regional Director Asia Pacific Alzheimer's Disease International, who has recently been acknowledged as one of UN Decade Healthy Ageing 50 Leaders. 

She shared her experience in the art of caring for family members with dementia.
