Pakistan Opposes UNHRC Debate On Uighur Muslims

ATLANTA (Pajhwok): Following opposition from Pakistan and several other Islamic nations, the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) decided against debating the treatment of the Uighurs Muslim minorities in China's northwestern region of Xinjiang.

Earlier, the UN's human rights office opined the scale of the alleged abuses in the Chinese region could amount to what it called crimes against humanity.

On Friday, the motion for a debate on the alleged human rights violations was defeated by 19 votes to 17, with 11 nations abstaining.

As China hailed the UNHRC decision as a vindication of its stance, others condemned it as a shameful act.

Like Pakistan, other Muslim-majority countries, including Indonesia, Somalia, the UAE and Qatar also voted against the motion. At least 11 nations abstained.

The United States, Canada and Britain were among the countries that brought the unsuccessful motion.
