EU has sanctioned new Russian areas

(MENAFN) On Thursday, the European Council expanded anti-Russian sanctions to Zaporozhye and Kherson, two former Ukrainian districts that joined the Russian Federation this week. The EU's governing council revealed its decision in a statement on the eighth package of penalties imposed on Moscow for "illegal annexation" of Ukrainian regions.

“The Council also decided that as of today, the geographical scope of the restrictions introduced on February 23, including notably the import ban on goods from the non-government-controlled areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, will be extended to cover also the non-controlled areas of the oblasts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson,” the statement writes.

The EU issued its first round of sanctions against Russia on February 23, the day before Russia started its military attack in Ukraine. This was done in reaction to Moscow's recognition of the People's Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk as sovereign entities. Seven additional packages have been adopted since then.
