France criticizes Russia’s elections in Ukraine

(MENAFN) French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna on Tuesday criticized the votes hosted in the breakaway areas of Ukraine as “illegal” and endangered Russia with extra restrictions by the European Union.

Colonna, who is on a representative took a trip to Kyiv, in a press meeting stated that the referendum was “simulated” and “illegal.”

“If Russia proceeds with the organization of these illegal referendums, then there will be sanctions on the part of the European Union with the full support of my country,” she noted throughout a press meeting with her Ukrainian equivalent Dmytro Kuleba.

She pointed out that the referendums arranged by Russian leader Vladimir Putin in line with the mobilization of reserve forces, and an escalatory rhetoric on the nuclear problem, is not going to “distract us from our principles or our goal."

Moscow on Tuesday finished the votes in Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Luhansk -- alternative districts in Ukraine ruled by Russia. Russian state media declared that 98 percent of electorates requested to participate in Russia.
