Dhaka : A Supreme Court lawyer on September 11 served a legal notice on the government, asking it to stop exporting Hilsa fish to India in seven days.
Md Mahmudul Hasan sent the legal notice to the authorities concerned of the government, saying that the commerce ministry has given permission to export Hilsa without considering its demand to the people of Bangladesh.
Secretaries to the Commerce Ministry, Fisheries and Livestock Ministry, Foreign Ministry, Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry and Revenue Board Chairman, Bangladesh Tourism Corporation Chairman and Office of the Chief Controller of Imports and Exports were made respondents to the notice.
In the legal notice, he said the poor people of the country cannot afford to buy Hilsa due to its high cost.
The lawyer, in the legal notice, said the price of Hilsa has been increased in the markets of Bangladesh due to export of this type of fish to India.
Mahmudul Hasan further said Hilsa fish is not exportable product under the Export Policy 2021-2024.
However, the commerce ministry has approved the export of Hilsa to India ignoring the interest of the people of Bangladesh and in violation of law, he said added.
Mahmudul Hasan said, he will take appropriate legal action if the government does not stop the export of Hilsa to India in seven days.
