Incomplete Rainwater Drainage Network Works Caused Corniche Flooding: Ashghal President

The piling of rainwater at Corniche during the rain Thursday was due to the incompletion of rainwater drainage network works, said Dr. Eng. Saad Al Muhannadi, the president of the Public Works Authority (Ashghal).

Certain contractors & consultants did not follow instructions on preparation for rain season, Al Muhannadi added in a series of tweets Saturday. He said necessary measures will be implemented to rectify the problem.
Unusual rain expected in the coming years too and Ashghal is working arduously to reduce any impact, he said. Even then, a network has certain capacity & design capability, he reminded. Heavy rain leads to water accumulation that is to be automatically drained through network. For the process to be smooth, ample time is required.
Recently, Qatar spent generously on a rainwater drainage network for Expressways. But the networks have certain capacity, he pointed out.



If the rain water volume exceeds such capacity, it is normal for water to pile up. Only that it is to be automatically drained through network and that requires time, Al Muhannadi said.
Though the amount of rainfall of last Thursday equals the amount of rainfall occurred on Oct 2018, its affect did not exceed 6% at the same locations affected in 2018, he said. He added that this proves the efficiency of the drainage network that was implemented and completed.




Areas without rainwater drainage networks use operational solutions, Al Muhannadi said. But efficiency its is limited & longer time is required to pump out water.
During heavy rain, piled dust causes blockage in rainwater drainage networks, impacting water draining functionality, Al Muhannadi pointed out.

He said Ashghal is responsible and committed to providing services that match the expectations and the organisation do not seek excuses.
