Russia asks documentation about return of Nord Stream turbine

(MENAFN) Russian state energy giant Gazprom has formally requested paperwork from German industrial behemoth Siemens authorizing the repatriation of a critical gas turbine that had been impounded at the company's Canada location because of penalties.

According to a declaration from Gazprom quoted by Interfax news agency, “on July 15, Gazprom officially requested Siemens to provide documents that, in spite of the current sanctions regimes of Canada and the European Union, would allow the export of a gas turbine engine for the Portovaya compressor station, a critically important facility for the [Nord Stream] gas pipeline, to Russia, and the fulfillment by the Siemens group of companies of its obligations regarding the repair and maintenance of gas turbine engines.”

The Nord Stream pipeline, which connects Germany and Russia, and the supply of natural gas to European customers, are in jeopardy, according to a warning from Gazprom.

One of the primary channels for Russian gas shipments to Europe, the Nord Stream pipeline, is temporarily inoperable owing to a 10-day maintenance window.
