According to local sources, an 8-year-old girl was ax-murdered in Logar province in eastern Afghanistan.
The 8-year-old girl was killed with an ax in Baraki Barak district of Logar province on Monday, July 4th, according to local Taliban officials in Logar who also confirm the crime.
The girl was allegedly killed by her sister-in-law using an ax after being initially choked, according to Ahmadullah Annas, spokesperson for the Taliban's police chief in Logar Province.
The offender was apprehended and confessed to the crime, according to the Taliban official in Logar.
Local sources, however, assert that the girl's sister-in-law, who is currently being held by the Taliban, has mental health issues.
There are 30 million people in Afghanistan, and half of them are under 18. According to UNICEF, persistent conflict, forced relocation, a poor economy, and detrimental social norms and practices expose them to extreme instances of violence and abuse.
Afghan females are subjected to child marriages, honor killings, domestic violence, and sexual violence. Five ladies killed themselves and one young girl was killed in less than 36 hours.
