KABUL: Dozens of Afghan refugees have been killed by the Iranian border forces alongside the border between Afghanistan-Iran within the past six months, local officials said.

As Afghanistan is griped with severe economic breakdowns, thousands of people are trying to leave the country through the western border with Iran.

There have been reports of dozens of dead and wounded as a result of the gunfire by the Iran security forces on Afghan refugees.

“According to relatives of the patients, the sick and wounded people were beaten on the border when they wanted to cross the border into Iran,” said Jailani Sharifi, nursing director of Nimruz Hospital.

The residents of Herat and Nimruz urged the government to hunt down the issue.

“The dignity of Afghans must be preserved and not disrespected. They should deport them with dignity,” said Bismillah Sirat, a resident of Nimruz.

Last year, a human rights watchdog expressed concerns over the status of the Afghan refugee mainly crossing the roughly borders of Iran and Turkey to seek asylum in the European Countries.

Iranian forces have repeatedly shot and killed many Afghan refugees who are seeking to cross the border illegally to make an end meet.
