North Macedonia Holds Second Round of Local Elections

(MENAFN) Voters in North Macedonia are heading to the ballot boxes on Sunday for the second stage of local elections.

Citizens are selecting mayors and council members in 33 municipalities where no contender secured the necessary 50% of votes during the initial round.

Polling stations opened at 7 am local time (0600 GMT) for more than one million registered voters and will remain open until 7 pm (1800 GMT).

The two leading candidates from the first round are now competing against each other.

In the capital city, Skopje, the choice is between Orce Gjorgjievski, representing the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization – Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE), and Amar Mecinovic, the candidate of the Levica Party.

Elections in the municipalities of Gostivar, Vrapciste, Mavrovo-Rostuse, and Centar Xupa will be postponed, as voter participation in the first round did not meet the required threshold.

Approximately 1,600 accredited observers will oversee the voting process to ensure transparency.
