Xiaoning Lu

(MENAFN- The Conversation) Reader in Chinese Culture and Language,

I received my BA (Chinese) from Nanjing University, my MA (Modern Chinese Literature) from Fudan University in China and my PhD (Comparative Literature) from SUNY Stony Brook in the United States. Prior to joining SOAS University of London, I taught cinema and cultural studies at SUNY Stony Brook and Ludwig-Maximilian University. Since joining SOAS in 2010, I have taught a range of Chinese Studies modules including Chinese cinema, modern Chinese literature and contemporary Chinese society.

My research has been preoccupied with understanding the complex relationship between cultural production and state governance in modern China. I have authored Moulding the Socialist Subject: Cinema and Chinese Modernity (1949-1966) (Brill,2020) and co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Communist Visual Cultures (OUP, 2020). Currently I am researching transnational film practices in the People's Republic of China from 1949 to 1989.
